Tulsa Global Alliance and Circle Cinema invite you to a special 25th anniversary screening of “Spirited Away,” the classic Japanese animation film from Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli! The screening is in celebration of Tulsa’s Sister City in Japan, Utsunomiya. Come early to learn more about Utsunomiya with a Tulsa Global Alliance display in the lobby, then learn more about the Sister City partnership and history of the film with a special introduction to the screening from Tulsa Global Alliance and Circle Cinema. The film will be presented in Japanese audio with English subtitles. Tickets on sale now, regular price.Utsunomiya is the capital of Tochigi Prefecture, known for its historic sites, modern industry, and specialties like gyoza, strawberries, and jazz. It sits north of Tokyo near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nikko. The Sister City logo highlights the kibuna, Utsunomiya’s yellow carp of good fortune. A local legend tells of a carp that healed villagers during a smallpox outbreak, and the kibuna remains a symbol of protection and gratitude in the city.

Originally released in Japan in 2001, “Spirited Away” is widely regarded as one of the greatest animated films of all time and one of the best from acclaimed director Hayao Miyzaki and the legendary Studio Ghibli animation team. The film saw release in the US in 2002, and would go on to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature alongside countless other awards and recognitions over the years. Drawing from the rich history of Japanese myth and folklore, 10-year-old Chihiro moves with her parents to a new home in the Japanese countryside. After taking a wrong turn down a wooded path, Chihiro and her parents discover an amusement park with a stall containing an assortment of food. To her surprise, Chihiro's parents begin eating and then transform into pigs. In this supernatural realm, Chihiro encounters a host of characters and endures labor in a castle for spirits, awaiting a reunion with her parents.
