'Painting Ulysses' comprises 18 magnificent paintings, each representing one of the 18 episodes found in James Joyce's novel. Remarkably, Aidan Hickey has meticulously designed each painting in a distinct visual style, mirroring Joyce's diverse literary approaches within 'ULYSSES.'
This exhibition arrives at the ICC directly from The James Joyce Centre in Dublin, marking its UK premiere. It stands as one of the many high-profile events hosted by the ICC in celebration of its 25th anniversary.
In a fashion reminiscent of James Joyce's own tumultuous journey, Aidan Hickey embarked on his 'Painting Ulysses' odyssey in 2016. It all began with a conversation with fellow artist Tom Mathews, who posed the question, "Are you intending to paint all 18 episodes?" Aidan's response: "Why not?" And thus, his artistic odyssey commenced.
The exhibition had its humble beginnings in Dublin in 2016, followed by a curated showcase of nine episodes at the Duke Street Gallery in 2018. It culminated in February 2022 when all 18 episodes premiered at the James Joyce Centre in Dublin, receiving an extraordinary response.
Notable figures like Irish Author Roddy Doyle and `Film Director Sé Merry Doyle praised the exhibition, with Roddy Doyle describing it as "brilliant" and emphasising the abundance of humor. The decision to bring 'Painting Ulysses' to the ICC in time for Bloomsday celebrations was a resounding success, marking a special centenary year for the venue.

 Praise for 'Painting Ulysses':
Declan Kiberd, Professor of English at UCD and author of 'Ulysses and Us,' hails Aidan Hickey's work as "outstanding merit" and a worthy commentary on James Joyce's masterpiece. Robert Nicholson, Director of The James Joyce Centre in Dublin, acknowledges the pictures' intricacy, humor, and range of references as a fitting visual complement to Joyce's great work.
Renowned painter Robert Ballagh commends Hickey's series for its skillful execution, meaningful content, and ingenious blending of Joyce's text with the works of other esteemed artists.
 About the Artist, Aidan Hickey:
Aidan Hickey, a prominent Irish painter, honed his craft at Ireland's National College of Art. His extensive career also encompassed drawing and writing animated films, earning him numerous awards at international festivals. His notable works include 'The Boy Who Had No Story,' which clinched the IFTA prizes for Best Animation Film and Best Children's Film in 2005.
As one of Ireland's leading painters, Hickey's artistry has graced exhibitions worldwide. His portrait of Bram Stoker adorns the Dublin Writer's Museum, while his portrait of Colm Toibín hangs in Enniscorthy Library.
