About this Event
Octavia's Archives: World Building with What We Have
Module 2 of Level Ground's Social Practice Labs features our hyper-local activation workshops. We are proud to partner with Kennedy Arnette to extend the themes of Octavia E. Butler’s Dawn into an interactive workshop focused on world building with what we have.
Creative prompts guided by the visual language of Octavia Butler's archives and written legacy. We invite you to WORDWEAVE, WORLDMAKE, and STORYTELL through modern chaos using the author's timeless and self-determined drafting style.
This session begins with a brief presentation, with breakout group activities based on your preferred prompt, and a companion print designed to help apply these ideas in daily life.
Please plan to attend the full 2 hour workshop. Snacks and drinks will be provided. The event is free, but space is limited so please RSVP so we can plan accordingly.
Many thanks to Black Lantern Books for hosting this event.

About Kennedy Arnette
Kennedy Arnette is an archival worldbuilder, interactive designer, and communal educator who embraces placemaking as a form of ethical coalition building. Using culturally intuitive strategies, Kennedy works to support Black people and the historically dispossessed as we recover our legacies to live in greater relationship with change. Born and raised (primarily) in Los Angeles, themes of housing justice, food sovereignty, and self-determination inform Kennedy’s unique archival practice. The founding of Perennial Memory Lab is an extension of this grassroots pedagogy for new-world histories. For more information, check out https://perennial.ghost.io/about/.
About Social Practice Labs
Level Ground’s Social Practice Labs are artist-led humanities seminars and workshops inspired by revolutionary texts that have provided us with analysis and frameworks that lead to cultural and political change. The program is best suited to support artists and cultural workers in developing works that interrogate our socio-political landscape and build pathways towards the movement-inspired art.
About Level Ground
Level Ground is an award-winning nonprofit artist collective and documentary production company. We create purposeful and sustained spaces where filmmakers and visual artists can learn, develop, produce, and exhibit work with and for each other and our communities. Our programs are designed to address the common barriers artists face by fostering non-extractive and regenerative practices around artist support and development and helping to remove economic barriers so that artists can sustain their work over time. Our core community is based in Los Angeles, but our work reaches audiences across the country and around the world. For more information, check out https://www.levelground.co.
