About this Event
This year's theme for National Eucalypt Day is "Our Eucalypt Home: Unique, Irreplaceable, Treasured".
Celebrate our unique, irreplaceable and treasured gum trees with a guided walk in the 'Green Heart of the City'.
We will trace the evolutionary journey of eucalypts, from their humble roots as fringe dwellers at the edges of vast, ancient rainforests, to the incredibly diverse genus of trees that dominate the Australian bush today. Some may think that trees are kind of boring, but the story of eucalypts is an epic tale of surviving and thriving across the driest and most fire prone continent on Earth!
During this 1hr / 600m long walk along acessible, paved footpaths, you will:
- Learn how to identify four common local eucalypt species by noticing differences in bark, leaf shape, seed capsules, and habitat
- Discover the survival superpowers that enable eucalypts to be so resilient in harsh conditions
- Understand why old gum trees enable the Botanic Garden to provide refuge for rare wildlife, such as Powerful Owls and Squirrel Gliders
