The play, which premiered on Broadway in 1983, starred Kathy Bates and Anne Pitoniak. It was also adapted into a 1986 film starring Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft.
It won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, and the Drama Desk Award.
