About this Event

For the final stage of the research project, “More than one way to burn a book:culture wars, censorship, and neutrality in Scottish public libraries,” funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh, we will be hosting a full day workshop in Glasgow at the CILIPS Office(Robertson House,152 Bath St, Glasgow, G2 4TB). This event will take place on Tuesday 12th May, from 10am -4.30pm.

(Please note, we will also be running this workshop in Stirling on Thursday 7th May - click here to book).

The project is being undertaken by Dr David McMenemy, Reader in Information Studies at the University of Glasgow, in partnership with Steven Buchanan, Professor in Communications, Media and Culture at the University of Stirling, along with our colleagues at CILIPS.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided, and we also have a budget to reimburse travel expenses. Each workshop will have a capacity of 25 attendees.

The workshops will explore themes emerging from the first two stages of the research related to experiences of censorship and attitudes toward censorship and selfcensorship in Scottish libraries.

The morning sessions will present our findings to date, providing an overview of the current situation in Scotland, and participant responses to this data. The afternoon sessions will involve groupbased activities and interactive elements designed to capture participant experiences. Indicative themes include pressures on library staff to selfcensor, and the personal and professional impact of experiencing censorship.

All data will be recorded anonymously through Slido, an interactive tool that collects realtime responses from participants using their mobile devices or laptops. We hope you will consider taking part in one of these workshops to help us build a rich data set on how censorship is affecting the Scottish library sector.
