The Portage County Public Library welcomes author Andrea Nolen to discuss an obscure Wisconsin gang detailed in her 2025 book, “Lincoln’s Counterfeiters,” at the Stevens Point Branch on Monday, March 16 at 6:00pm.Nolen writes of how President Abraham Lincoln, in need of cash to fund the Civil War, turned to the nation’s leading counterfeiters to make money, including an enterprising band of criminals in Monroe, Wisconsin called the “Bonelatta Gang.” The gang’s activities and influence lingered long after the war and played a role in the creation of the Chicago Mob, the Ziegfeld Follies and the New Age Movement.
This event is free and open to the public. A Q&A and book signing will follow Nolen’s talk. Call 715-346-1548 for more information.
