Africatown native Darron Patterson was the first Black sportswriter t the the Mobile Press Register, and is a four time Associated Press award winner for "Besty Story of the Year" in both news and sports. He later contributed stories for USA Today and was feactures writer at The Detroit News, covering all for of that city's professional sports teams.... Lions, Pistons, Tigers and Red Wings.A gratudate of The University of Texas at El Paso (Mass Communitications), he is the great-great grandson of "Kupollee", one of the 110 survivors of Clotilda, the last ship of enslaved Aftericans to dock in America, and is a liftetime member of the Clotilda Descendants Association.
Darron was also the first Black beat writer in the country from a major newspaper to cover NASCAR and Indy-Car Racing circuits, and later served as Director of Communications for the City of Detroits's Resource Management System.
He has appeared on the CBS television show 60 Minutes, serves on the board of directors for the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame and the The Mobile Sports and Entertaiment Group, and is the vice chairman of the board of the research group "Kinfolkology".
Darron is now a Senior Technical Writer and Document Control Specialist at Airbus Defense and Space, is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Freternity and is married to the former Sandy Grimes, who herself was also the first African American to service in human resources at the Press Register.
