About the Play
I Take Your Hand in Mine… traces the passionate relationship between playwright Anton Chekhov and actress Olga Knipper.
The play is inspired by more than 400 letters exchanged between the world-famous writer and the star of the Moscow Art Theatre, documenting their six-year relationship.
During much of that time, circumstance kept them apart. Chekhov lived in Yalta in the south for medical reasons, while Knipper remained in Moscow for the theatre season.
Playwright Carol Rocamora weaves these letters into a story of love, longing, and separation, revealing insights into Chekhov’s creative process and the world of theatre.
Chekhov died at the age of 44 from tuberculosis. Olga Knipper lived until 1959, reaching the age of 90. She never remarried.
A Note from the Director
Although based on Chekhov’s letters, I Take Your Hand in Mine… is not a play by Chekhov, but a play about Chekhov.
In staging the production, the goal was to remain faithful to Chekhov’s poetics, where the most meaningful moments often occur between the words rather than in them.
