ARTS Southeast is pleased to present "Gold Can Stay," a Solo Exhibition by Coulter Fussell on display in The Ellis Gallery at ARTS Southeast from March 7 – April 12, 2025.
"Gold Can Stay" is an exhibition of new upholsteries presenting experiences of contemporary youth in their native, rural landscapes. Using her two teenage sons and their friends as muses and collaborators, these new works document moments of poetry, mystery, humor and danger that are innate in their everyday lives.

“I screenshot stills from Snapchat videos my kids send me and print them on translucent chiffons and gauzes. After using a variety of brightly colored fabrics as under-layering, I upholster soft relief sculptures. The images in the works span from late night gatherings in parking lots, highway drives home toward the afterschool sun, a splash into a nighttime swimming hole illuminated by the headlights of a pick-up truck, a nap in the front seat of a car in the vo-tech parking lot, wrestling with a pal in the blue screen-glow of a video game, a midnight roman candle war over fields, peach trees and raccoons. Interspersed in some of the works are stills from Kodachrome slide images my father made in the 1980s.
'Gold Can Stay' is the first organized expansion of my crowd-sourced textile works into using crowd-sourced digital photography as a new media.”

About the Artist: Coulter Fussell (b. 1977, Columbus, Georgia) is a visual artist who lives and maintains her studio in Water Valley, Mississippi. Her practice spans quilting, upholstery and mixed media works that intersect photography and sculpture. Working across these forms, she produces dream-like, playful objects that blur perspectives of love, violence and place in a rural world. Coulter integrates textile materials donated by friends and strangers with crowd-sourced video and photography, creating forms that compare global conflicts, both historical and current, with interpersonal psychodramas.
Experimental enthusiasm, optimism, humor and the philosophy that Craft is the beginning and end of all Art guides her work. Coulter learned to quilt from her mother and make dolls from her grandmother. The rest she learned from YouTube.
Coulter spent two decades as a full-time, career diner waitress while raising her children in rural north Mississippi. During that time, she won numerous art awards ranging from the 2017 ArtsSouth Southern Prize Finalist to a 2019 United States Artist Fellowship in Craft to the 2021 Jane-Crater Hiatt Fellowship at the Mississippi Museum of Art Biennial. Coulter has most recently received a 2024 Grant from the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund for Feminist Visual Art and 2024 funding from The Andy Warhol Foundation of Visual Arts for Exhibition Support via The Mississippi Museum of Art. Having exhibited in numerous institutions and galleries across the South and New York City, Coulter is currently a full-time studio artist.
