Farewell to Manzanar is a 1976 made-for-television film based on the book by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James D. Houston. The movie tells the story of Jeanne Wakatsuki’s experiences as a Japanese American child imprisoned with her family at Manzanar during World War II, exploring themes of resilience, identity, and family.
In today's context, it is essential for those in our community to remember — understand — what occurred in the U.S, including Hawai‘i, at another time in history: the forced removal and incarceration of Japanese Americans by federal agents.
Access Notes: Please note that access to temple parking is from Lusitana St. behind the temple, not from Pali Highway. 1742 Lusitana St. is a good address to use for navigation devices. There is parking both behind and in front of the temple. The Social Hall is immediately below the main temple sanctuary, and is accessed either via an elevator in corridors on the ocean side of the temple, or by using the front steps on the Pali Highway side that go up a bit from the parking lot and then down to the Social Hall.
