Duch, Man or Monster? Please ber our guests for a video version of a deeply unsettling one-man stage play that provokes its audience by probing the mind of Kaing Guek Eav, ‘Duch’, - chief of Tuol Sleng prison - who rationalized Khmer Rouge atrocities and mass murder under the weight of obedience and fear. But beneath Duch’s confessions and his justifications of his monstrous actions, the audience can find a human being – a man.
This play offers no overt opinion, no editorializing making the huge question it asks so unsettling. It would be far easier to answer if he wasn’t.
Written & directed by Matthew Robinson of Khmer Mekong Films; performed by Sok Sothun, a renowned Cambodian actor who himself suffered under the Khmer Rouge regime.
