Alternative Photography, a new exhibition at Pictor Gallery, features award-winning New York–based photographer Joseph O’Neill. In this body of work, O’Neill uses alternative photographic processes to demonstrate how conceptual imagery can evoke powerful responses without relying on traditional storytelling. “As photographers, we are taught that for a photograph to have an impact, it must tell a story,” O’Neill explains. Instead, he emphasizes abstraction and aesthetic experience, encouraging viewers to respond viscerally and create their own interpretations rather than having a narrative imposed upon them. Through chemigrams, phytograms, photograms, and other alternative printing techniques, O’Neill challenges conventional expectations of photography. “I want to tear down the stereotype of what a photograph should be,” he says, expanding the medium into new artistic territory. O’Neill has also exhibited with Pleiades and Phoenix Galleries, with work shown nationally and internationally.
Manufactured Reality, with Al Benkin, Deb Flagel, Marco Lando, and Souren Teghrarian:
Al Benkin (aka Mutantland) draws inspiration from the absurdities of everyday life and the fragile balance between the human-made world and the natural one. Their multimedia work explores how we navigate the tension between these constructed and organic environments.
Deb Flagel views daydreaming and creativity as intertwined forces, capable of dissolving the present moment and transporting us into spaces of wonder and connection—alternative realms where ideas can fully unfold.
Marco Lando’s work is influenced by his New York theatre background. Marco Lando combines existential narratives, dramatic lighting, and surreal stage design to create otherworldly mise-en-scènes that operate on a visceral and symbolic level.
Souren Teghrarian’s largely figurative abstractions emphasize color and suggestion over declaration. While aesthetic in intent, his photographs invite viewers to interpret the meaning for themselves.
