In "Hehasnoname," the long elegiac poem that comprises most of Music of the Wide Lane deep mourning continuously changes. “Hehasnoname” haunts the thresholds that connect the material (a particular life) and the immateriality of a soul (the realm of myths, ideas, and art). This reading and talk will focus on the scientific, spiritual, and communal aspects of deep loss and consolation that Sharron Hass embodies, as she continues to extend what it is possible to say in Hebrew language poetry, and how the struggle to articulate the unutterable can be translated into English.
Marcela Sulak is the author of five poetry collections, most recently, ; the National Jewish Book Awards finalist, ; and the lyric memoir (2020). She’s co-edited the Rose-Metal Press title . A translator from the Czech, French, and Hebrew, Sulak’s work has been recognized by PEN and the NEA fellowship. Sulakis managing editor of The Ilanot Review, and she directs the Shaindy Rudoff Graduate Program in Creative Writing at Bar-Ilan University. Sulak earned her Ph.D. from the Department of English at the University of Texas at Austin.
