Join us in conversation with U.N. Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese to learn more about the genocide in Gaza today and what led to it
About this Event

We here at Busboys and Poets Books have been watching with horror as the siege on Gaza continues and the civilian death count rises day by day. In partnership with the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies, African Studies Program & Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding of Georgetown University, we present The Gaza Lecture Series of 2024. We invite everyone to come and learn more about the history of settler colonialism, violence, and genocide in Palestine. Join us for this session to learn about the what/why/how behind genocide, and what genocide looks like in reality as it plays out in Gaza as we speak.

United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967 Francesa Albanese is joining us on the Busboys stage to share her scholarly and personal experiences surrounding Israeli mass violence in Palestinian territories. She’ll be joined by Dr. Nader Hashemi, Associate Professor of Middle East and Islamic Politics at Georgetown University.

This event is free and open to all. Our program begins at 6:00 pm, and will be followed by an audience Q&A. Copies of PALESTINIAN REFUGEES IN INTERNATIONAL LAW (2nd Edition) will be available for purchase before and after the event. Please note that this event is IN PERSON and will be livestreamed.

We ask that guests RSVP in order to receive direct updates about the event from Busboys and Poets Books

Francesca Albanese is an Affiliate Scholar at the Institute for the Study of International Migration at Georgetown University, and a Senior Advisor on Migration and Forced Displacement for the think tank Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development (ARDD), where she co-founded the Global Network on the Question of Palestine (GNQP), a coalition of renowned professional and scholars engaged in/on Israel/Palestine. She has published widely on the legal situation in Israel/Palestine; her latest book, PALESTINE REFUGEES IN INTERNATIONAL LAW (Oxford University Press, 2020), offers a comprehensive legal analysis of the situation of Palestinian refugees from its origins to modern-day reality. She regularly teaches and lectures on International Law and Forced Displacement in European and Arab universities, and speaks frequently at conferences and public events on the legal situation of Palestine. She worked for a decade as a human rights expert for the United Nations, including the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Relief and Work Agency for Palestine Refugees. In these capacities, she advised the UN, governments, and civil society across the Middle East, North Africa, and the Asia Pacific, on the enforcement of human rights norms, especially for vulnerable groups including refugees and migrants. She holds a Law Degree (with honors) from the University of Pisa and an LLM in Human Rights from the University of London, SOAS.
