https://www.tickettailor.com/events/mildmayclubandinstituteltd/1752697The Mildmay Club and The Jonny Halifax Invocation present a special live performance of Ananda Shankar's seminal self titled debut album from 1970. This record has become legendary in DJ and vinyl collector circles due to it's first of a kind fusion of Indian classical music with western rock and proto electronic music. With it's up front Sitar and Tablas coupled with Moog synthesiser and funked up beat combo backing, makes this a unique piece of East meets West musical history.
The Jonny Halifax Invocation pioneered their 'In The Round' Acid Blüüs Rääg psychedelic art happening performance at The Mildmay Club last summer. The Invocation now extend their line-up to feature some of the leading Indian style instrumentalists in the country with Tommy Khosla on Sitar (under the tutelage of Anoushka Shankar) and Vishnu Vijayan on Tabla and percussion. Both are deeply versed in the heritage of Indian classical music whilst dynamically navigating it's contemporary cross cultural possibilities.
On 12 September this unique cross cultural ensemble of 8 players from The Jonny Halifax Invocation and Tommy Khosla's JIWARI band will interpret 'Ananda Shankar' by Ananda Shankar in 2 live sets. Performing 'In The Round' in the middle of the floor of the main hall at The Mildmay Club painted with live psychedelic liquid light projections from visual artist Pat Grimm. The performance will be introduced by Jonny Trunk of Trunk Records, also spinning vinyl between live sets with Invocation sonic compadre DJ Psych Milligan. This is clearly a not to be missed evening of audio and visual entertainment.
Both Tommy Khosla's JIWARI band and The Jonny Halifax Invocation have been receiving regular BBC6 Music airplay with The Invocation recording a recent live session for Marc Riley and Gideon Coe. Tommy, has recently collaborated with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Jonny and Tommy recently performed together at Glastonbury this year on the Strummerville stage.
