About this Event
This course is suitable for anyone interested in learning how to take a piece of wild wood found on a beach, in a woodland or elsewhere, and giving it a new life. No previous experience is necessary, just a love of wood and a curious nature!
Minimum age 18 years, however please ask if you are interested in a younger person attending. As with all our courses we can arrange a private booking for an individual or small group on an alternative date, please just get in touch.
An idea of what the course will cover:
- where to find wildwood
- how to assess its potential
- basic tool selection and safety and how to set up a basic work station on a budget
- initial cleaning and preparation
- dealing with problem areas such as decay, splits & cracks
- shaping, including splitting, & cutting
- finishing and presentation.
- a brief look at some more advanced tools & techniques
- follow up advice after the course has finished
This course is more about developing skills and knowledge that you can apply at home, rather than everyone making a particular item. You will get the opportunity to try a range of simple tools and techniques, but you may not finish any one piece on the day. In fact most participants go home with several pieces to continue working on.
You are welcome to bring any wildwood you may have knocking about and we can take a look. You never know, it may hide some cool woody secrets!
We will spend time exploring the surrounding woodland in search of interesting pieces to fire the imagination and to work on, and aim to be based outside all day, so please do dress for the weather, including sturdy footwear and a waterproof jacket just in case. If the weather proves to be troublesome we can make use of our indoor workspace, and a wood burning stove will keep us warm in the colder months.
