SUMMER COURSE

Davina Two Bears, instructor

Join Prof. Davina Two Bear for five-days of learning and discussions on the historic SAR campus in Santa Fe.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will focus on topics in Indigenous Southwest archaeology from Native American and Indigenous perspectives. It will cover a brief history of the relationship between Native Americans and archaeology/archeologists in the Southwestern U.S. Participants will learn about several Southwest Native American/Indigenous archaeologists representing the Navajo Nation, Hopi Tribe, Pueblo of Zuni, White Mountain Apache Tribe, and other Native nations and their research; collaborative and/or decolonizing Southwestern Indigenous archaeological projects; Native concerns in archaeology—including issues surrounding the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA)—and the protection and/or management of archaeological sites, including traditional cultural and sacred places both on and off Native reservations.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Davina Ruth Two Bears is Diné (Navajo) originally from the community of Birdsprings on the Navajo reservation in northern Arizona. She is a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow at Arizona State University in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change. Davina’s current community-based research of the Old Leupp Boarding School, an early 20th–century federal Indian boarding school, focuses on its reuse as a Japanese Isolation Center in 1943 during World War II. Davina received her PhD in anthropology with an emphasis in archaeology and a PhD minor in Native American Indigenous studies from Indiana University Bloomington in 2019.
