Inspired by the collaboration of poetry and music in singer-songwriter Allison Preisinger's latest musical project, this evening is all about collaboration, connection, and creativity. The evening is an open invitation to anyone who would like to immerse themselves in a variety of creative mediums either through observation or interaction. As the title suggests, there will be no pressure to interact, simply come and observe or create as you please.
Attendees will be guided through a workshop on collage making at the beginning of the evening by local artist Aidyn Dervaes. All materials will be provided and your project can be worked on throughout the evening of music and poetry. Additional creative materials will be available to write, draw, color, and create throughout the night while you enjoy new music from Seattle singer-songwriter JR Rhodes and Tacoma singer-songwriter Allison Preisinger. We will also have a special guest performer joining us, poet, Mari G. who will share a couple of her original works.
Allison Preisinger
Allison Preisinger is a performing songwriter with songs reminiscent of Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison with warmth to brighten up even an overcast Pacific Northwest sky. Allison has released three albums of original music and is currently working on her fourth collection of songs to be released in 2024.
Standing Steady, the forthcoming full length from singer songwriter Allison Preisinger, is a stunning tribute to the power of stillness and simplicity. Written with inspiration from - and collaboration with - poems and poets, the record blooms from the nexus of two deeply human forms of self-expression. The journey of creating Standing Steady proved a balm for Preisinger’s mental health, anxieties, and depression. It’s fitting then, that an artist interested in using her work to be heard has created a record that allows others to feel heard. And really, at the end of the day, that’s the most comforting thing there is.
JR Rhodes
Singer-songwriter J.R. Rhodes believes in the transformative power of music.
From her first open-mic performances at the O.K. Hotel, Seattle, to her latest album I Am, these beliefs in the transformative power of music are distilled into songs of quiet intensity that traverse spirituals, folk, blues, jazz, and rock.
Rhodes muses, “It’s easy to be cynical. It takes a lot to be intentional. It takes a lot to dream. It takes a lot to love.” Her recent release, I Am, takes the listener into love and then heartache, through rebirth, and finally, up into freedom.
J.R. is currently working on two new albums. One recording is a cinematic folk album entitled 'Ma'am' including music inspired by the works of African-American artists Alice Walker, Nikki Giovanni, Elizabeth Cotten, Langston Hughes and more. The other recording is a collection of songs of African-American heritage including spirituals, slave songs and lullabies.
Aidyn Dervaes is an artist and musician from Palmer, Alaska. Currently working to uplift art and stories through her passion for historic preservation and communal learning. Dervaes often uses found-objects and materials in her practice, she references stories from the past through her narrative work.
