FOR “WHENEVER YOU GET AROUND TO IT” RELEASE
Jason Bieler and Phil Varone, with considerable vim and carefully rationed vigor, announce two Florida appearances only, celebrating 30 plus years of assorted Saigon Kick music.
While these are not technically farewell shows, nor a reunion, if you know anything about Saigon Kick there is a statistically significant 74 to 78.4 percent chance this will never happen again.
These two Florida appearances consist of a special hometown show at the Funky Biscuit on Friday April 17, followed by an appearance at the Capitol Theatre on Saturday, April 18. One could assume that playing a larger theatre in Clearwater indicates the band is more popular there. This assumption would be incorrect. The more accurate explanation involves an exceptional breakfast establishment within walking distance of the amazing Funky Biscuit, and the fact that Jason and Jeff play there every year, and can actually find the venue...Logistics matter.
Phil and Jason represent 50 percent of the original Saigon Kick lineup, which in many cases is 100 percent more original members than certain other legacy bands currently touring. Furthermore, since this is partially a celebration of Saigon Kick music, including The Water era, and since Saigon Kick was a three-piece at that point, you are actually getting 66.6 percent of the original lineup for that record. To avoid further confusion, let’s round up and call it 75 percent.
Jason and Phil both feel strongly that they will be operating at no less than 95 percent capacity of their previously mentioned collective 50 percent share, while guaranteeing a minimum of 85 percent effort for 100 percent of these two shows. Based on internal optimism and selective memory, we estimate this makes them approximately 30 percent better than the last time you saw them. If you have never seen them, you will need to do your own math.
This elevated performance level is due in no small part to the addition of legendary vocalist Jeff Scott Soto, hereafter referred to as “Soto Kick.” Jeff did, in fact, sing background vocals on the first Saigon Kick album, for which he was not paid, so please do not bring it up. He has also sung for Journey, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra. At one point someone claimed he sang for Genesis, but this has since been disproven. We are actively seeking a fact checker.
On bass, Stephen Gibb joins the proceedings. We could mention that he played with Zakk Wylde and Crowbar, but then we would sound like name droppers, which we are. Stephen was an original member of the Saigon Kick reunion shows seven to ten years ago. This makes him not technically an original member of the 1991 originals, but if your first Saigon Kick show was in Chicago in 2015, then Stephen is absolutely an original member to you. Phil was not at those shows. Jonathan Mover was. Jonathan never played on any Saigon Kick albums, but he did play with Aretha Franklin, and now we have gone completely off the rails.
To be clear, this is not a reunion. It is a special, limited, Florida-only event consisting of exactly two shows. This is not due to a lack of offers, but because we generally do not enjoy spending extended periods of time together. Think of it as a sizable and assorted gaggle of Saigon Kick members, and non-members depending on perspective, performing the music of Saigon Kick as a tribute to themselves.
Most notably, this will mark the second and third ever performances of Jeff Scott Soto fronting Saigon Kick. We are cautiously optimistic that everyone will be playing the same songs at the same time. At this stage, it is simply too soon to know.
