Join world-renowned specialist on Islamic history Prof Nile Green as he discusses his new book Empire’s Son, Empire’s Orphan – a fascinating exploration of the lives of Ikbal and Idries Shah who convinced spies, poets, orientalists, diplomats, occultists, hippies and even a prime minister that they held the keys to understanding the Muslim world.
Prof Nile Green is the Professor & Ibn Khaldun Endowed Chair in World History at UCLA. He is an historian of the multiple globalizations of Islam and Muslims. After beginning his career as a historian of India and Pakistan, he has traced Muslim networks that connect Afghanistan, Iran, the Indian Ocean, Africa, Japan, Europe and America. Review of his books have appeared in The New York Times (as Editors’ Choice), The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, The Los Angeles Review of Books, The Times Literary Supplement, The Literary Review, Prospect, Time Out, as well as major newspapers across the English-speaking world from the Toronto Star to the Sydney Morning Herald (as Pick of the Week), in addition to South Asia and the Middle East.
Dr Arthur Asseraf is an Associate Professor in the History of France and the Francophone World at University of Cambridge and Fellow of Pembroke College. He is an historian of modern France, North Africa, and the Mediterranean, with particular interests in the history of media, colonialism, and race. Born and raised in Paris, he first came to the UK to study at Cambridge. Since then, he spent time studying in the USA, UK, and Lebanon, before returning to Cambridge to join the History Faculty in 2017. He has also held visiting positions in France, and in 2023-2024 is Pro Futura Scientia fellow at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Studies in Uppsala.
