More than a century ago, Berlin’s own Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld offered a startling new approach to sexuality and gender. Amid the deeply conservative culture of early 20th-century Germany and in defiance of an increasingly powerful far-right, Hirschfeld championed a broad spectrum of identity and gave hope to society's outcasts through consultation, activism and pioneering gender-confirmation therapies. Come for a night of discussion and readings dedicated to the visionary sexologist with Daniel Brook, author of the major new Hirschfeld biography, “The Einstein of Sex”, and James J. Conway, translator of Hirschfeld’s 1904 study, “Berlin’s Third Sex”, moderated by Alexander Wells, Books Editor for The Berliner.* Doors open at 19:30. The event will start at 20:00. Free entry.
