Bookmark and Cavendish Literary Festival are excited to be welcoming bestselling authors Kate Quinn and Janie Chang to Charlottetown on Tuesday, March 10th at 7 pm for the launch of their new books at St Paul’s Anglican Church. Kate and Janie will discuss their new novels The Astral Library and The Fourth Princess: A Gothic Novel of Old Shanghai with bestselling author Donna Jones Alward. This is going to be a wonderful evening, we hope you (and your bookclub) can join us! The event is free and all are welcome.
The Astral Library by Kate Quinn
From New York Times bestselling author Kate Quinn comes a gorgeously written fantastical adventure which poses the question: Have you ever wished you could live inside a book? Welcome to The Astral Library, where books are not just objects, but doors to new worlds, new lives, and new futures.
Alix Watson has learned one lesson from her barren childhood in the foster-care system: unlike people, books will never let you down. Working three dead-end jobs to make ends meet and knowing college is a pipe dream, Alix takes nightly refuge in the high-vaulted reading room at the Boston Public Library, escaping into her favorite fantasy novels and dreaming of far-off lands. Until the day she stumbles through a hidden door and meets the Librarian: the ageless, acerbic guardian of a hidden library where the desperate and the lost escape to new lives...inside their favorite books.
The Fourth Princess by Janie Chang
Internationally bestselling author Janie Chang’s new book The Fourth Princess is a haunting Gothic novel set in 1911 China. Two young women living in a crumbling, once-grand Shanghai mansion face danger as secrets of their pasts come to light, even as the mansion’s own secret threatens the present.
Lisan Liu is elated when she is hired as secretary to wealthy American Caroline Stanton, the new mistress of Lennox Manor on the outskirts of Shanghai’s International Settlement. However, the Manor has a dark past due to a previous owner’s suicide, and soon Lisan’s childhood nightmares resurface with more intensity and meld with haunted visions of a woman in red. Newly married Caroline looks forward to life in China with her husband, away from the shadows of another earlier tragedy. But an unwelcome guest attends her party and claims to know secrets she can’t afford to have exposed. All the while, strange incidents accelerate, driving Lisan to doubt her sanity as Lennox Manor seems unwilling to release her until she fulfills demands from beyond the grave.

The Astral Library is her first foray into magic realism.
JANIE CHANG is a Globe and Mail bestselling author of historical fiction. Her novels often draw from family history and ancestral stories. She is the author of Three Souls, Dragon Springs Road, The Library of Legends, and The Porcelain Moon; and co-author of the USA Today bestseller The Phoenix Crown, with Kate Quinn.
