About this Event
Ever wondered about the stories that shape our understanding of race, justice, and the Black diaspora? Join us for an evening with award-winning journalist Gary Younge as he presents "Dispatches from the Diaspora," a powerful collection of writing that spans three decades of groundbreaking journalism.
Join us on Monday 2nd December, from 7-11pm at Reference Point (2 Arundel St, London, WC2R 3DA).
"Dispatches from the Diaspora" takes readers to the frontlines of history:
- Nelson Mandela's first election campaign
- Obama's victory celebrations on Chicago's southside
- The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans
- Intimate conversations with voices ranging from Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Maya Angelou to Stormzy
Our guest, Gary Younge, brings these moments to life through the lens of someone who has not just witnessed but deeply analysed their significance. As winner of the 2023 Orwell Prize for Journalism and a professor of sociology at the University of Manchester, his work bridges the worlds of academic insight and compelling storytelling.
"Every citizen – and citizen journalist – should have a copy," writes Lemn Sissay of this essential collection. Nesrine Malik calls it "a public service," whilst Bernardine Evaristo celebrates Younge as "an outstanding journalist and chronicler." The book examines how much change is possible whilst unflinchingly acknowledging the systems that resist transformation.
Through pieces published in Granta, New York Times, Financial Times, and beyond, "Dispatches" creates an unrivalled body of work that examines the most significant issues facing the Black diaspora. As Priyamvada Gopal notes, Younge stands as "one of Britain's few true public intellectuals... A tonic for our fighting spirit in wearying times."
