About this Event
An Evening with BIBLIOMANCERS
Come celebrate the release of BIBLIOMANCERS’ phantasmagorical new book Mask Garden, which “reveals the ecstatic horror of hidden identity though the paperback cover persona.” The event features a screening of a new body horror short film by director Christina Acevedo, “The Pointy Slippers,” which tells the story of a woman who, on a date, conceals the excruciating pain caused by her new shoes, only to discover that her hidden suffering takes on a life of its own, becoming impossible to ignore. Followed by a rare screening of Czech animation legend Jiří Barta’s surreal and fantastical 1989 short film "Club odlozenych" (Club of the Laid Off), 25 min., where discarded mannequins live out their forgotten lives in a dilapidated warehouse – until new mannequins are unexpectedly brought in. After the screenings, join us for an atmospheric live musical performance by local legend MR. PHARMACIST!
Bios:
Bibliomancers is a Los Angeles based small press created by occult collage and new media artists Astraleyes and Speed Gallery. Bibliomancy traditionally is the practice of divination through books. By using intuition and a seemingly random selection of passages from a collection of books the seeker can apply its wisdom or symbolic meaning to provide
guidance, perspective, or inspiration. We at Bibliomancers have developed a practice where we decode a curated mosaic of books, inviting the viewer to have their own experience within the framework of carefully selected images and text. Astraleyes has been collecting books using bibliomancy for over 30 years. Together with Speed Gallery, Astraleyes has begun the process of curating and publishing a collection of strange catalogs of his personal library. With our most recent trio of publications, Bibliomancers brings a visceral experience of connecting, ni a non-digital physical realm, with esoteric and often forgotten paperback books.
Christina Acevedo is a multifaceted artist based in Philadelphia. Her directorial and screenwriting path took off in 2008 with her debut short film ‘Wild Idle’ making waves at the Cannes Film Festival and ICA in Philadelphia. Over the years, Christina has produced experimental music under the pseudonym ‘T I N A' , created video art, short films, and embarked in music video production, including notable music video collaborations with visual artist and performer Geneva Jacuzzi. She also founded ProForce Sport, a martial arts athleisure wear brand, in 2021. Recently, Christina completed a short body horror film, ‘The Pointy Slippers’ and she’s now deep into the research and development of her next horror project, promising thrilling cinematic ventures with heavy practical effects.
