When Sophie Drear takes a summer job as head gardener at Lilymoor, a storied estate perched on the Maine coast, she’s seeking solitude, salt air, and a chance to reset as she grapples with grief. What she doesn’t expect is a secret garden that appears without warning—or the mysterious man she finds inside it, bound by its magic and desperate for her help to escape.
As Sophie is drawn deeper into Lilymoor’s enchantment, she becomes entwined with the estate’s heirs and faced with an impossible choice between what she’s lost and what might still be possible. Ultimately, she must decide whether Lilymoor is only a temporary refuge—or the place where she can finally put down roots.
With its whimsical setting, sharp banter, and signature magical twist, Poston delivers a story that feels both fantastical and achingly real—rich with yearning, beauty, and an emotional payoff that lingers long after the final page.
Ashley Poston is the New York Times bestselling author of Sounds Like Love, A Novel Love Story, The Seven Year Slip, and The Dead Romantics. A native of South Carolina, she lives in a small gray house with her sassy cat and too many books. You can find her on the internet, somewhere, watching cat videos and reading fan fiction.
Dr. Jo Ness prefers jellyfish to people. Her best friend, Aldo, was the exception, but he died seven months ago. So she spends her days hidden away at an underfunded aquarium with her specimens and a draft of the jellyfish guide she and Aldo had been working on together. His voice is alive in the notes in the margins, and it’s enough. Almost.
Until she receives a call from Nadia, one of the few other humans she’s loved but whom she hasn’t heard from in years, asking for her help. Nadia tells her a grand tale of a giant jellyfish terrorizing her tiny island off the coast of Maine and sends a grainy video of the creature. Frankly, the footage looks fake, but Jo drops everything to fly across the country to see Nadia again, and to find this supposed sea beast. She couldn’t save Aldo, but perhaps she can help Nadia.
But when Jo arrives on Shattering Point, Nadia is nowhere to be found, and the islanders she meets each have something different to say about the creature they’ve dubbed Clementine . . . a jellyfish who changes all who see it.
Tessa Yang is the author of the short story collection The Runaway Restaurant.
