An Evening of Adventure | Sydney Monday 30 September 2024
The Australia & New Zealand Chapter of the Explorers Club (ANZEC) is proud to announce the next ANZEC Evening of Adventure in Sydney.
This intimate evening is open to all members and non-members and will include stimulating presentations from cave diver & documentary maker Jill Heinerth and polar explorer James McAlloon.
Under Thin Ice by Jill Heinerth
Nearly twenty five years ago, Jill Heinerth a National Geographic diving team made the first cave dives inside icebergs. The B-15 iceberg, the largest moving object on our planet, had calved from the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica. Jill was drawn to share her adventurous dives in a way that stimulated a conversation about our changing planet. Today, she is still exploring the depths of the polar regions.
The earth’s cryosphere is transforming more rapidly than anywhere else on earth, with temperatures in Canada’s north rising at twice the rate seen elsewhere. Humanity has left the refrigerator door wide open in our kitchen – the food-generating, climate-regulator at the heart of our planetary home. How we respond in the next few years could seal our fate.
Heinerth’s presentation will take the audience along on a series of expeditions documenting the life above, below and within the ice. She will share clips from her documentary “Under Thin Ice,” and never seen photos from her work with the Royal Canadian Geographical Society on her project “Arctic on the Edge.” From camping on the sea ice in Lancaster Sound to swimming with polar bears and walrus in northern Hudson Bay, her underwater adventures shed new light on the future of the polar regions.
Self-supported Across Australia by James McAlloon
A recent addition to the ANZ chapter of the Explorer’s Club, James has achieved many feats for a person of only 31 years as he forges a life of exploration for himself. Hailing from a small farm in Southeast Qld, He’s lived in 4 countries across 3 continents; becoming fluent in Spanish and proficient in Portuguese, climbed and mountaineered across North America, Australia, NZ, Africa and Patagonia, Hitchhiked 7,000km the length of South America, summited the tallest peaks in South America and Africa from the sea, led Charters to Antarctica by air and sea through his employer Chimu Adventures, Crossed Australia by foot and for the last 2 years, been preparing for an upcoming Antarctica Sea to Summit Expedition.
In tonight’s talk, James speaks about his 5,100km self-supported journey by foot across the length and width of Australia. Accessing some of its harshest and most remote areas, he tells how his journey is an example of why exploration not only connects you to nature and yourself but brings you closer to others; people from all walks of life demonstrating the best of humanity and the importance of selflessness in a world where that seems increasingly rare.
