The historic Anatomy Department at the University of Edinburgh is opening its doors for World Anatomy Day 2025.
About this Event

World Anatomy Day takes place on the anniversary of the death of Andreas Vesalius, the father of modern anatomy. To honour this day, the Anatomy Department at the University of Edinburgh is opening its doors to the public for a unique evening of talks, activities, and refreshments, curated by our team of expert anatomists.

This free evening event will begin at 18.30 on Friday 17th October 2025, and will take place in the historic Old Medical School, Teviot Place, Edinburgh.

The museum will be open to visitors from 18.30, before we move to the Anatomy Lecture Theatre to hear talks from two of Edinburgh’s most eminent modern anatomists: Professor Gordon Findlater, His Majesty’s Inspector for Anatomy for Scotland, and Professor Tom Gillingwater, Chair of Anatomy. They will take you on a journey through the history of anatomy and body donation, and look to what the future may hold.

Following the talks, there will be opportunities to meet with the Anatomy@Edinburgh team over a refreshments, where you can discuss all things Anatomy. Hear about our exciting programmes, workshops, and other activities – or join us in and around the museum for a range of interactive anatomy activities, including an appearance from the Edinburgh ATLAS facility, and a rare viewing of pieces from our Anatomy Art collection.

  • Please bring a copy of your ticket with you on the day (paper or on phone etc).
  • Under 16s to be accompanied by an adult.
  • Strictly no food, drink or photography in the museum.
  • The talks and activities at this evening event are to be enjoyed live: no recording or transmission of the event is permitted.
  • Please be aware that the museum displays historic human remains which should be treated with respect.
