AN ARTWORK DISCUSSION: A CRUCIAL COMMUNITY CONVERSATION
Famous Utah artist J. Roman Andrus created many pieces of artwork and is known and remembered as a landscape artist. However, there are a few pieces of his artwork that are NOT landscape. Our "An Artwork Discussion: A Crucial Community Conversation" will discuss one of these (see main picture).
In 1942, two years after Andrus joined the Art Department at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT, as a painting instructor, he created a lithograph completely unlike any piece of art he had done previously or after. Does its title say everything about the piece? Does it say anything about the artist? What does it say of the time period? What does it say of the culture and community he lived in? What does it say of what he was taught?
Our Discussion Panel
*Marlena Smith -- Award-winning Utah artist
*Kate Ithurralde -- Manager, S.L. County Art in Public Places
*Michael Christensen -- Manager, UT Cultural Celebration Center; Folklorist
*Robert Burch -- Executive Director, Sema Hadithi African American Heritage & Culture Foundation
There will also be time for all in attendance to discuss this piece together.
In 1950 Andrus became an assistant professor of painting and printmaking and in 1958 he was named to full professor at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT. While at BYU he taught a class in folklore. He founded and designed the printmaking department and also chaired the Art Department for a number of years. He taught at BYU until his retirement in 1972.
Andrus was a recipient of the Utah State Institute of Fine Arts Purchase Prize in 1945 and 1950. In 1974 he was named Professor Emeritus at BYU.
His work is in the collections of Brigham Young University, Springville Museum of Art, the Utah State Capitol, and as of 2024 Sema Hadithi African American Heritage & Culture Foundation.
