This workshop is designed to help world language educators elevate their online teaching methods, whether you teach fully online or employ a hybrid classroom. We will explore proven strategies to make online language learning more engaging, efficient, and effective. Topics include:

• Techniques to foster active student engagement and participation.
• Approaches to support students in producing language confidently.
• Methods to minimize the cognitive load of online courses for students.

In addition, participants will gain hands-on exposure to a variety of practical tools—many of which leverage cutting-edge AI technology—to help:

• Streamline course planning and management.

Michael:

Though Michael grew up traveling the world with his military family, he now lives in Utah with his wife, Jen, and their three children, where he creates online curriculum for Brigham Young University. He is a graduate of BYU and Western Governors University with degrees in German Teaching, Music, Educational Leadership, and Instructional Design. He enjoys acting in community theater, podcasting, playing and writing music, and spending time with his family. He is the author of many fictional and non-fiction works, including Sacred Days, Sacred Songs and An Advent Carols Countdown. He played for years with the Bells on Temple Square and is now a member of the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square.

Courtney:

Courtney is an instructional designer for Brigham Young University, where she helps create online courses for high school and adult learners. She graduated from BYU with a degree in mathematics and Utah State University with a masters in instructional technology and learning science. She has previously worked at Weber State and UCLA, where she designed learning experiences in everything from machine learning to screenwriting. Although her past research has focused on STEM teaching, she is passionate about applying universal learning principles to all subject areas. Courtney and her husband are expecting their first child in April. She is a big fan of the BYU Welsh Choir.
