About this Event

Please join us in celebrating the premiere of Lenka Clayton's new Art21 film, followed by a conversation with the artist. Following the screening, the artist will be in conversation with Tina Kukielski, Art21’s Susan Sollins Executive Director and Chief Curator.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and Art21 present this special screening of artist Lenka Clayton in “Human Nature.” “Human Nature” is the newest episode of Art21’s Art in the Twenty-First Century, the first series on television in the U.S. to focus exclusively on contemporary visual art and artists.

The artists featured in Art21's “Human Nature” series explore the central questions surrounding what it means to be human: investigating our impact on the environment and the world around us, probing the social and economic systems that define our daily lives, and discovering how we relate and connect with one another.

Lenka Clayton's practice is rooted in a close observation of the world around her, highlighting the myriad ways we record our lives and relationships, and create moments of magic through simple gestures and mundane materials. Making films by organizing strangers by age, creating sculptural installations of dangerous objects made child-safe, or installing exhibitions in the windows of local businesses, the artist draws inspiration from her community in Pittsburgh, her family, and the world around her. In doing so, Clayton creates a body of work that centers on the beauty of the everyday and the power of human connection.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has partnered with Lenka Clayton and her partner Phillip Andrew Lewis on three projects to date: On Air, an exhibition in 820 Liberty Gallery; A Sudden Gust of Wind, a public art installation taking place in tree branches in Downtown Pittsburgh; and Bird Circus, a new public artwork made for Arts Landing.
