In 2015 Terence Jay founded Nirvana Handpan, teaching himself metalwork in his garage and developing a distinctive sound that quickly grew in demand. What began as instruments for personal use evolved into a full workshop as players sought out his custom handpans.

In 2018 he introduced The Acolyte, the first reasonably priced, U.S.-made handpan of its quality. Its success led to the company’s rebranding as Acolyte Instruments and rapid growth. In 2022 Jay partnered with inventor Chris Anderson to create Euphonics, an aluminum instrument line inspired by the Cristal Baschet.

Jay recently expanded into gong making, releasing his first stainless-steel, nickel-silver, and titanium gongs in 2024 under Acolyte Gongworks. His work blends precision craft with sculptural artistry.

His creativity also extends to the visual arts. Jay collaborated with international artist Loris Greaud on Euphonic Array sculptures exhibited at the Petit Palais in Paris (2023–2024). He is now preparing a solo exhibition titled “Do you hear what I see?”, exploring vibration, nature, and interactive sound sculpture.

Today, Acolyte Instruments’ Glendale workshop produces a full range of original instruments—Handpans, Euphonics, Gongs, Chimes, Bell Plates, Sonoliths, and unique artworks. Visitors are welcome by appointment at or 310-487-2285. Learn more at AcolyteInstruments.com and on Instagram @AcolyteInstruments.
