With the first signs of spring, American woodcocks return to Newbury, bringing with them a courtship display you won’t want to miss. In partnership with Mass Audubon, educator and naturalist Scott Santino will lead us through the fields to observe the woodcock’s remarkable mating ritual. After a series of nasal “peent” calls, the male spirals high into the air (sometimes nearly 300 feet) before drifting back down like a falling leaf, often landing almost exactly where he began. As this display unfolds, we’ll move closer to the takeoff area to see whether a female has arrived. Join us to witness this impressive performance and learn about the many unique adaptations of this fascinating little shorebird.
