C3 explores the beauty, wonder and healing found in Nature and the power of the River to fire poetic and musical imaginations. Settings by Jake Runestad and Andrew Maxfield of the poetry Wendell Berry, who might be called “the earth’s poet” offer evocative meditations on the natural world and our human relationship with it. Two lush, “pastel settings” of river-related texts by William Hawley open our consideration of Rivers. They are followed by Nick Drake’s mysterious and hypnotic River Man, Foster’s Old Folks at Home and the traditional spiritual, Roll, Jordan, Roll in an a cappella ensemble style. Stephen Paulus’ beautiful arrangement of We Gather Together offers thanks while Florence Price’s Resignation hauntingly recounts the trials and tribulations of a life spent in toil and pain. Hawley’s beautiful setting of the Shaker song Not One Sparrow offers and reassurance, and Shawn Kirchner’s exciting arrangement of Sweet Rivers returns us to the Land of delight. This concert will feature members of the Dolphins String Quartet, Anthony Babino, guitar, and James Sheehan, baritone. Roger Wesby conducts.
All are welcome to attend.
