Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States, yet suicide can be prevented.
Volunteers from Oakland, California are joining the thousands of people who are gathering in towns across the United States to promote suicide prevention. The annual Oakland Out Of the Darkness Walk , hosted by the Greater San Francisco Bay Area Chapter will be held at 6:30 A.M., on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at Snow Park, Lake Merritt.
This gathering will support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s education, research and survivor support programs. In addition to raising awareness and funds to fight suicide, the walks give those who attend a chance to connect with others and know they are not alone, whether they walk in memory or in support of a loved one or in honor of their own mental health journey.
Black, Indigenous, People of Color, LGBTQ and other marginalized communities often face disproportionate inequities in care, support or mental health services in this country. Systemic racism, historical barriers and inequities have left particular ethnic, racial and minoritized populations facing trauma, loss, bias, social disparities and other unique challenges that have gone unsupported and largely unaddressed. We at AFSP remain committed to rectifying this by working with diverse communities, organizations and policymakers to ensure that mental health resources that are culturally relevant are equitably available across the nation.
There are 450 community walks across the country, but the Oakland Walk is unique in that this is the only walk, other than the national walk, that starts pre-dawn and finishes as the sun rises. Our walk route takes participants around Lake Merritt.
So, today we are asking that you join us in support of this important cause as we bring Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Awareness to our beloved Oakland Community.
