The United States officially adopted the design of its Great Seal with a bald eagle at the forefront on June 20, 1782. As our national symbol, the bald eagle represents strength and freedom. Today, June 20 also recognizes the bald eagle's conservation success story. In the 1900s, wild populations of bald eagles were at greater risk to habitat loss, illegal shooting, and unintended poisoning from the insecticide DDT. With the passing of the Endangered Species Act and the ban on DDT in the United States, bald eagle populations made a tremendous comeback.
