About this Event
On July 4, 2026, the United States marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In the lead‑up to this milestone, Brockway Memorial Library and South Florida People of Color invite you to an evening of poetry and conversation that asks: whose stories have shaped “Our American Story” – and whose have been left out?
“Our American Story: America 250 Poetry Night” features two dynamic South Florida poets, Taboo and Salam The Poet, sharing original work that explores history, identity, freedom, and belonging from their own lived experiences. Taboo is a Miami‑born spoken word artist and author whose raw, emotionally charged poetry centers grief, healing, and the quiet strength of everyday people. Salam The Poet is a powerful performer and recent winner of the inaugural Homestead Poetry Slam at the historic Seminole Theatre, known for work that lifts up Black culture, resilience, and “slices of heaven” in daily life.
Together, they will offer two 15‑minute sets of spoken word, followed by a guided conversation about art, memory, and what America means at 250 years.
The evening will also spotlight the winning entry from our community call for poems inspired by the America 250 “Our American Story” theme. One local writer will be invited to share their work and receive a special prize during the program.
This program is designed to be welcoming and family‑friendly while remaining honest and unfiltered about the joys and challenges of American life
