FREE EVENT! Join us for a one-day exhibition during the North Carolina Azalea Festival! Since the first state constitution was adopted in 1776, North Carolina leaders have rewritten the constitution twice and added more than 100 amendments. The exhibit provides an overview of the three state constitutions and their significant amendments that served to redefine the meaning of citizenship in North Carolina and who could participate in the political process. Explore North Carolina’s constitutional history. The original documents on display include the 1776 State Constitution and Declaration of Rights, the 1868 State Constitution, and a letter from John Adams’ commonly known as “Thoughts on Government.” Staff from the State Archives will be present to share insights and answer questions. We will also have activities for children including a seek and find, scavenger hunt, and more.
