Devised theatre is founded in collaboration, experimentation, and building upon a central idea. Starting with a concept, the first step is determining a goal. From there, through a series of exploratory attempts and feedback, the idea is improved upon. This workshop will consist of exercises, explorations, and experiments with the goal of identifying the modes and means necessary to create an original piece of work, including physical improvisation, writing exercises, and group discussion. Each participant will wear many “hats” – designer, writer, technician, and performer.
Key Points:
-identifying / questioning / articulating an idea
-learning what makes a theatrical event
-team work on building an event or moment
-implementation of non-verbal modes of communication
-sequencing events/moments into a series
-creation of narrative from a non-linear approach
-pulling from experience, experimentation, and imagination to produce new ideas
-this process requires an open mind, and a willingness to try something without fear of “failure”
Lacy Post is a director, performer, and teaching artist with a background in collaborative and experimental theatre. She is committed to questioning assumptions, embracing the complexities of the human spirit, and making theatre that is accessible. She is the co-founder of Live from the
Liars Table, a 2023 recipient of the Mid-America Arts Alliance Art 360 Award for Practicing Artists, and was a featured artist at the 2024 Venice Biennale. She holds a Directing MFA from the University of Arkansas and a BA in theatre from Bard College.
