About this Event
MINT is proud to present our MINTern Nia Hemmitt’s solo show Alternatives
Alternatives is a body of work about goth and alternative people in Atlanta. The prime reason for this work is to bring visibility to black and brown weirdos and centers individuality.
Nia Marjani Hemmitt (b. 1997) is an Atlanta based photographer. She graduated from Georgia STate University in the spring of 2021with a BFA in Photography. Hemmitt, during her time at State, gave back to her department by organizing fundraisers and Juried Exhibitions for GSU’s photography club Exlucis. In her time, she served as the treasurer for this club. Her body of work Alternatives garnered her a solo exhibition at the Kansas City Artists Coalition’s Snap Space Gallery. This work has also been featured in the Atlanta Photography Group’s 2021 Honor Roll Exhibition. She has been nominated for the Georgia State University 2021 Research Conference Award and the Joseph Perrin Award in Art and Design. Her hard work has also garnered her the Anderson Ranch Scholarship where she will gain more knowledge of photographic techniques in Snowmass, Colorado in August of 2021.
Through her photography Hemmitt hopes to accent marginalized groups of people such as black alternative women. The imagery seeks to bring visibility to the odd and amazing people in these communities. Mainly, this work serves as empowerment for black and brown people telling them that they can be and do whatever they want in life.
