About this Event

The University of Central Lancashire's Jeremiah Horrocks Institute is offering a series of free public stargazing nights at our Alston Observatory (http://www.star.uclan.ac.uk/alston/) over the winter months.

We will offer tours of our historic and modern telescopes, planetarium shows, short talks, and the opportunity to ask our astronomers any burning questions you may have. If the weather is suitable visitors will also be able to look through our collection of telescopes including the state-of-the-art 0.7m Moses Holden Telescope.

Due to limited space, numbers are strictly limited, so booking is required. Tickets are free, please do not purchase tickets from third parties or attempt to sell them, we reserve the right to cancel tickets transferred in this manner.

Visits will be scheduled into two groups; 6:00-7:45 and 8:15-10:00PM, this will allow younger children to attend the earlier session.

We ask all our visitors not to attend if displaying symptoms of Covid-19.

FAQs

Is there an age limit to take part?

There are no age limits, but children should be accompanied at all times, as the site will be dark.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

We have very limited parking, so please try to share rides, or arrange a taxi/lift to and from the event. The observatory is on an unlit country lane and is not safe to walk along at night.

What should I bring to the event?

Observing can be cold so please bring something warm to wear. A small torch, ideally covered with something red, such as a transparent sweet wrapper, will help you navigate the outdoor parts of the observatory without ruining your or anyone else's night vision.

Where can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Queries can be directed to [email protected]
