‘’SMOKE & SIDERITIS’’An Immersive Journey into Ritual, Fire, and Song @Ruigoord

On Thursday, June 11th,as part of the ‘Along the Silk Road series’, the sacred interior and wild gardens of the Ruigoord Church will be transformed into an immersive landscape of Mediterranean memory. Curated and hosted by Amsterdam-based multidisciplinary artist Anastasios Sarakatsanos, Smoke & Sideritis is a four-hour sensory experience that blurs the line between audience and performer, theatre and village feast. Moving through four distinct “scenes,” the event guides the audience from intimate indoor storytelling to an ecstatic outdoor celebration.
The night begins in the pews of the Church with a collective ritual: the brewing and sharing of Sideritis (Greek Mountain Tea). Grounded by acoustic performances and storytelling, the event will organically spill outdoors. Greeted by the smell of woodsmoke and grilling food, the audience will gather around a large fire to eat, drink, and dance, recreating the timeless spirit of a traditional village gathering.
Featuring a masterfully curated lineup of musicians spanning Greek polyphony, Anatolian percussion, and folk wind instruments, Smoke & Sideritis is an invitation to strip music and community down to their most essential forms.
THE EXPERIENCE: FOUR SCENES OF MEMORY
The evening is structured around four archetypal energies, flowing seamlessly into one another:
Tea: Inside the Church, the night opens with the shared preparation of Greek mountain tea – an ice-breaking moment of quiet communion and arrival.
Stories: Through spoken word and acoustic melodies, we explore the passage of time – the rustling of nature, the shifting of seasons, and the echoes of memory and heritage.
Fire: The doors open. We transition outdoors to a large fire and open grill. The smell of smoke and food sets the stage for a communal meal where everyone has a seat at the table.
Dance: The night culminates in a high-energy, participatory musical celebration under the open sky, inviting the audience to become part of the act.
