A special edition of this walk in memory of James Prinsep
April 22 is the death anniversary of a great scholar, orientalist and antiquary. A person who came to India from England in the year 1819 at a young age and thereafter leave behind his scholarly works in India for historians to decipher. He died in the year 1840 at a young age of only 41 years. He is James Prinsep.
Come and get to know the times of the rise of this city along the river in the village of Govindopur. The first docks in the city were moorings on the east bank of the Hooghly River, far to the north of the present Dockland. The earliest were in north central Calcutta, about three hundred years back in Dihi Kolikata and Bazar Kolikata around Lal Dighi. The active port moved south in the second half of the 20th century.
ITINERARY:
1) Half an hour boat ride on Hooghly early morning
2) Walk down from Prinsep Ghat to Judges Ghat and back to Prinsep Ghat.
CHARGES : Rs 1250/- per person (includes a serving of bhar of tea and local refreshment from the tea stalls).
