Each year at All Souls Day, we lift up and remember those beloved to us whom we have lost and no longer see. We celebrate their memory and commend their souls to God's loving care. Because music often speaks when words fail us, this service always features a major musical setting of the Requiem mass, sung by the Cathedral Choir. This year, the choir sings Victoria's Officium Defunctorum (a 6), a haunting and stirring setting of the Requiem by one of the greatest composers of the Renaissance. Composed in response to the death of Victoria's patron Dowager Empress Maria in 1603, the Requiem was Victoria's last composition before his own death and is widely regarded as one of the greatest compositions of the late Renaissance.
