The first film adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s culture shifting novel, All Quiet on the Western Front was the film was the first to win the Academy Awards for both Outstanding Production and Best Director. Set during the first World War, the story follows Paul Bäumer, a young German schoolboy who, along with his friends, is inspired to "save the Fatherland" and joins the Kaiser's forces. But soon after arriving at the front, their illusions of glory and adventure are dispelled by the cruel realities of war. (1930, 140 mins)
