Ali Omar El-Farouk Quartet is a world-fusion ensemble bringing together four of Bangkok’s most accomplished musicians under the direction of Egyptian-Canadian oud player and composer Ali Omar El-Farouk. Blending the rich traditions of Arabic maqam with jazz and global improvisational practices, the quartet creates a sound that is both deeply rooted in heritage and strikingly contemporary in expression. The ensemble’s repertoire features original compositions alongside carefully crafted arrangements of Arabic and Middle Eastern classics, reinterpreted through a modern, cross-cultural lens. Centered around the oud, an instrument seldom heard in Bangkok’s music scene, the music invites listeners into a nuanced dialogue between Eastern melodic traditions and Western harmonic language.
Presented at the Siam Society, this performance highlights the artistic and cultural intersections that emerge when musical traditions travel, adapt, and evolve across borders. It forms part of Ali Omar El-Farouk’s final concert series in Bangkok before his return to Egypt, offering audiences a distinctive and meaningful musical experience.
Lineup:
