Alberta Unbound is a musical celebration featuring Frank Rackow and the Black Sea, HYMMMelodies, and the MAPL Quintet. Frank Rackow and the Black Sea, featuring Allan Merovitz, are firmly based in the klezmer tradition, with touches of folk, funk and swing. The group includes JUNO-nominated Allan Merovitz, former lead singer with The Flying Bulgar Klezmer band. The group has been featured at the National Music Centre, Theatre 1308, ProArts at Noon and has toured in Alberta and BC. They also hold a monthly klezmer jam at Congress Coffee Company A previous incarnation of the group played the Calgary Folk Festival and recorded for the CBC. Allan Merovitz (vocals and percussion), Frank Rackow (clarinet and saxophone), Greg Rumpel (accordion/guitar), Greg Goldenberg (bass), Robin Tufts (drums and percussion).
HYMMelodies
HYMMelodies is a global music band, combining Persian and Arabic Sounds, with Flamenco dance, Latin and Klezmer music to create a unique fusion of eastern and western traditions. The band has evolved in eight years to include woodwinds, electric bass, percussion and guitar, along with the Arabic Oud and the Persian 72-stringed santur. HYMM has played the Jack Singer Concert hall as part of TEDxYYC, has been featured on the main stage at Alberta Culture Days, Global Fest, and performs regularly for community celebrations and at clubs and festivals.
Members: Bijan Meysami (santur), Aya Mhana (Oud, vocals), Anastassia Alexander (Flamenco dancer), Yenny Farias (percussion), Jaime Calderon (guitar, vocals), Frank Rackow (saxophone,clarinet, flute), Greg Goldenberg (bass).
MAPL Quintet
The MAPL Quintet puts a jazzy spin on great Canadian songs from the 1960s until present day. Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Gordon Lightfood and kd lang, are some of the artists whose classic songs are rearranged by this jazz quintet. MAPL's debut EP, Canadian Songbook, continues to received airplay across the country (including recently on CBC's Saturday Night Jazz). The group has been featured at Canada Day celebrations, the CBM Jazz series, the Beatniq jazz club, Okotoks' RPAC Theatre and in Westlock Arts series, among others. Members include: Nynne Collins (vocals), Andrea Petrity (piano, arrangements), Frank Rackow (saxophones), Stefano Valdo (bass), Robin Tufts (drums).
