About this Event
In conjunction with the exhibition Ainu Stories: Contemporary Lives by the Saru River, Japan House London presents two free public screenings of the film Ainu – Indigenous People from Japan (2019) by director Mizoguchi Naomi.
Filmed in Biratori, Hokkaido this documentary follows the everyday life of four elder members of the resident Ainu community: Kawanano Kazunobu, Kayano Reiko, Nabesawa Tamotsu and Kibata Sachiko. All born in the 1930s, they grew up as Ainu but were not taught the language by their parents and grandparents due to the social perception of Ainu identity at that time. After shifts in sensibility throughout the decades, they reconnected with their heritage and became active local leaders to help revitalize their language and culture.
Focussing on their experiences and efforts in the preservation of history and culture through Ainu language classes and participation in several daily activities, the film narrates how Ainu culture and tradition is alive and thriving through people’s efforts and presents a statement of hope for the generations to come.
A panel discussion on the making of the film, chaired by Japan House London Director of Programming Simon Wright with contributions from the film director and members of the Ainu community of Biratori, was held in October 2020 and is available to watch online.
The screening is in Japanese with English subtitles. Duration: approx. 81 minutes.
The exhibition Ainu Stories: Contemporary Lives by the Saru River is on display in the Gallery at Japan House London from 16 November 2023 until 21 April 2024.
Guests who are booked to attend the screening can also enjoy 10% off drinks at The Stand on their way in.
