Aint Sisters - A Brief Band HistoryThe Aint Sisters was formed in 2012 as a collaboration between friends, Arrie Bozeman (vox, guitar, mandolin) and Barb Carbon (vox, guitar). In late 2013, Justin Boudreau (bass) and Jesse Hamilton (drums) joined the team. This lineup remained the core of the band through early 2019.
The Aints independently released their first full-length album, Marrow in November 2018. That year, Arrie also released an EP with her side project, The GMOs, a band that featured Richie Jones on drums. In 2019, Barb released a solo record, The Fighter, with Justin Boudreau on bass, Jaron Pearlman (Shadow Boxers, Indigo Girls) on drums, Ian Klin (Future Babes, Dylan LeBlanc, SUSTO) on keys, and a long list of guest players including Levi Lowrey (Zac Brown Band) on fiddle and guitar, Claire Campbell (Hope for Agoldensummer) on back up vocals, Adam Poulin (Grassland String Band, Caroline Aiken) on fiddle, Jonny Daly (Drag the River, Jackson County Line) on pedal steel and guitar, and - of course - Arrie Bozeman on guitar. Jaron Pearlman also engineered and co-produced that album.
In the wake of their successful side projects, the Aints re-grouped. Jesse Hamilton departed to focus on school and John Cowin (Copious Jones, Donna Hopkins) stepped in on drums. As the band gained a stronger following and began to play bigger venues and festivals, they frequently featured Ian Klin on keys and he has since become an intermittent but official 5th member. By late 2019, the band had picked up steam and put together its first regional tour slated to begin on March 22, 2020. We all know what happened there. Covid sidelined the Aints for the better part of a year, although they worked to maintain contact with their fanbase via live streams and occasional “pod” concerts. Of note, the Aint Sisters teamed up with Chattanooga favorites, Strung Like a Horse, and Atlanta’s most beloved promoter, Thomas “TDawg” Helland” to put on a stripped-down version of TDawg’s famous Hootenanny events in the parking lot at From the Earth Brewery in Roswell, GA. Many Atlanta music fans point to that show as the only live music event they attended during the pandemic.
When his partner took a job as a traveling Covid nurse in 2021, John Cowin resigned from the band. Next up on the kit for the Aints was local heavy hitter, Kee Turnage. A monstrous powerhouse on the drums, the addition of Turnage to the lineup marked a turning point for the band that had thus far been seen as a folk rock unit. Suddenly, their sets were punctuated with blast beats and deep grooves, pushing their genre deeper into the straight rock category. Excitement about the new sound spread and the Aints started landing bigger gigs including Forward Fest (Oliver Wood, Kyle Tuttle, Blair Crimmins and the Hookers), Holla Yella (Old Crow Medicine Show, Sierra Ferrell, Infamous String Dusters), and the closing slot for the 2021 Atlanta Dogwood Festival.
2022 saw yet another personnel change behind the drum kit, and this trade was the secret sauce. Long-time universal Atlanta drummer, Richie Jones (Donna Hopkins, Ralph Roddenbery, Jeff Mosier Ensemble), stepped in and stepped up the game, bringing not only his unique skill and showmanship on drums, but another layer of harmonies to the vocal arrangements, and a wealth of music industry expertise that would prove crucial for the next chapter in the Aint Sisters’ rise. Things were about to get hot. Having persistently shown up and made themselves known as on-stage guests (with Ralph Roddenbery, Donna Hopkins, Donna the Buffalo), and late-night campfire jam favorites, the Aints finally earned their way onto the 2023 lineup for the Suwannee Spring Reunion in Live Oak, FL. The buzz was getting loud. Back home in Atlanta, the band was working hard to hone their sound, and their regular shows at Tin Roof Cantina were packed out with excited fans. Aware of the massive opportunity that was before them, The Aints came out swinging at Spring Reunion and made a serious impact on the crowd, the crew, and the other bands. The groundswell of excitement and support that has followed their Live Oak debut has landed them in uncharted waters.
After a decade-long career as local favorites, in November of 2022, the Aints had celebrated their 10th anniversary as a band at the Cave at world-renowned Tree Sound Studios in Atlanta (recording home to Outkast, Elton John, The Indigo Girls, Justin Beiber, Whitney Houston, and countless other legends). It was a dream come true to perform there, and on a whim, Barb whispered to Arrie that night, “What next?” Arrie replied, “Variety Playhouse.”
After a full year of standout appearances at local venues and regional festivals, including a return to the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park where they rocked the venue’s fall event, Roots Revival, The Aint Sisters stepped out onto the stage at Variety Playhouse to open the evening at the 12th Annual Holiday Hootenanny where they shared the stage with the wildest lineup yet, ranging from old friends like Ralph Roddenbery and Jeff Mosier to long-time heroes like Peter Stroud (Sheryl Crow, Don Henley), Kevin Scott (Government Mule), and Benji Shanks (Blackberry Smoke).
2024 is shaping up to be the year that the Aints graduate to full regional status, as they gear up for a first quarter that includes headlining performances in Charlotte, NC, Athens, GA, Tampa, FL, Augusta, GA, and Chattanooga, TN and many more appearances later in the year including Charleston, SC and Columbia, SC, as well as a return to Suwannee Roots Revival and debut appearances at several other regional festivals including Sunshine Getdown in Brooksville, FL and Heartwood Soundstage Festival in Gainesville, FL.
What may appear from the outside to be a meteoric rise, is actually the culmination of over a decade of hard work and perseverance that is finally paying off. The Aint Sisters is a band that has defined the concept of grit. They don’t have the slick, polished presentation like so many of their peers, but what they do have is raw and unfiltered passion that has translated into an intense cult following reminiscent of other unkempt and gritty Georgia bands like Widespread Panic and the Indigo Girls. Despite their rough edges, the Aints offer up a surprisingly diverse and sophisticated catalog of original music that continues to grow and morph, constantly challenging and delighting crowds with unexpected stylistic twists and turns. 2024 will see the release of their first-ever vinyl record, the long-awaited and eagerly anticipated 15-track post-apocalyptic double-vinyl, Atomic. Described by Holler Magazine as “a jolt of energy,” this band is about to shake things up.
