About this Event
The City of North Miami is honored to host a panel of the AIDS Memorial Quilt for public display from Monday, June 1 – Sunday, June 7, at the Scott Galvin Community Center.
As the largest community arts project in the world, the AIDS Memorial Quilt is a teaching tool to help educate people about HIV/AIDS, its continued impact today, and to remember the 700,000 U.S. lives lost in the four decades since the first cases were reported. Quilt displays help support local HIV/AIDS service organizations, LGBTQ+ centers, and raise awareness about the issues of health and social justice. Today, there are roughly 50,000 panels dedicated to more than 110,000 individuals in this epic 54-ton tapestry.
In addition to the display of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, Councilman Kevin A. Burns is also sponsoring a special screening of the movie Philadelphia on Thursday, June 4. Philadelphia is one of the first mainstream Hollywood films to explicitly address HIV/AIDS and homophobia, and to also portray gay people in a positive light, for which Tom Hanks won Best Actor at the 66th Academy Awards.
Attendance at this screening is free, but registration is encouraged.
